Wii wanted Spore, Wii got Spore!

Will Wright, the genius mind behind Sim City, has recently talked with Guardian Unlimited in an interview. During the interview, Mr. Wright says a few very interesting things. The first and most exciting tidbit is without-a-doubt that Spore, Wright’s latest creation, is now officially coming to the Nintendo Wii!

Here’s a snippet from the interview:

“We’re doing Spore on the Wii, and we did MySims. It takes signifcant. PS3 and Xbox 360 are similar enough that you can. So it comes down to what the interesting major platforms are and which markets we want to hit.”

Galaxy Nov. 14th? Something’s not right there…

chris.gif
mgalaxynov14.jpgI spotted this today while browsing through the Nintendo information book at work today, that our reps from Nintendo give us that gives all those employees who know nothing about Nintendo the information they need to appear knowledgeable on the subject. This was listed on the information page relating to Super Mario Galaxy. It’s not an old page, our Nintendo book was updated just recently, and another small Galaxy advertisement in our store also reads November 14th as the release date. They’re likely wrong, but it makes me wonder what’s going on in the heads of those that make up these things. Is the Canadian release date different than the American one? Is it just our chain? I know some Canadian stores advertise the release date as the day after the official one, just to make sure that they’ll have it in stock, since the games rarely arrive ON the release day, but 2 days after it? On my searching across the internet, I found no other reference to a November 14th release date, anywhere, leading me to confirm my suspicions with myself that this is just some weird mistake.

Still, I find it incredibly bizarre that both a Nintendo-printed advertisement for Galaxy would say the 14th, and the official information page about Galaxy also reads the 14th. Have I gone mad?

WiiWare game - Pop

I thought a post needed to be made about this game. It’s a really cool looking and unique puzzler scheduled for the launch of WiiWare. It’s called Pop, and the goal is to pop on screen bubbles with the Wiimote. Small bubbles are worth more points, while large bubbles are worth more time. Accidentally hitting the background will make you lose points. It’s a really cool idea and things could get pretty crazy when you have four people playing it at the same time. Not to mention it has beautiful stylized graphics that are perfect for the Wii. Keep an eye out for this one in early 2008.

You can check out more information and screenshots of Pop at the game’s official website.

King Dedede’s Hammer Actually a Big ****ing Rocket Hammer

chris.gif
kingdedede_071026g.jpgJust having a giant hammer was good enough for me, but today’s Smash Bros. Dojo update features King Dedede’s special moves, and his big Down-B move takes out half of his mallet to reveal a jet engine inside. An engine which you can charge up and take out other characters with. I envision it to be as effective as the Hammer item in the original Smash Bros. and Melee (though it likely won’t be as powerful), which takes Dedede’s cool points up to like a billion. Unfortunately the hammer also does damage to him, and the longer you charge it up the more it hurts him, so there’s the catch I guess.

Other special moves include a big jump and then smash on the ground with his hammer for his Up-B move (regular hammer, unfortunately, not rocket-hammer…), kingdedede_071026h.jpgand his Left/Right-B move involes him hurling a waddle-dee (which comes from where, exactly?) at his opponents.

You can see more images of King Dedede in action over at the Official Smash Bros. Website.

MySims Review

chris.gif

mysims_artbox.jpg

Take EA’s The Sims and Nintendo’s Animal Crossing and stick them in a blender. Add a heaping spoonful of unabashed anime cuteness and you’ve got MySims. Sounds like a perfect combination right? Well, sort of. The end result is far from the spectacular gaming smoothie that you would expect, and while it does have its merits, particularly a terrific building mode, it falls far short of what it could be.

Way in Dusk announced - one very cool/odd game

Gonintendo has received a press release from Elephant Games, announcing that they have at last become an authorized developer for the Nintendo DS. The developer has unveiled its first project for the handheld, entitled Way in Dusk. The game is a third-person shooter/adventure presented in Cell-shaded 3D. Let me tell ya… this one is interesting, and in more than one way. Here’s a clip from the press release explaining why:

“In Way In Dusk, you assume the role of a guardian angel, St.John, who is a loyal employee of the Special Department of Heaven Office. You’re a very special being, able to shift between the Real and Astral worlds. You were sent to an obscure place called the Hollow City. It is a post-nuclear city infected with sorcery. Dreadful monsters, mutated from humans and cars inhabit this odd place. Within the city lies a great threat which you should discover and eliminate at all cost. On your way to accomplish the mission, you’ll visit all dark corners of the city and discover many of its wicked secrets. The intriguing storyline will surprise you with several twists and in the end the hero will have to make the fatal choice between Life and Death.”

Smash Bros. Update - King Dedede

chris.gif

071025smash1.jpgIt’s actually really funny, because just yesterday, Kevin and I got talking about Brawl, and how odd it was for MetaKnight to be involved, and not a more well-known character from the Kirby-verse, and he gave, specifically, King Dedede as an example.

Well Kevin, I guess you’re psychic.

It looks like King Dedede is going to be a pretty big character, size-wise, with a pretty bad-ass giant mallet (Ice Climbers, anyone?).

You can see more pictures of the King over at the Official Smash Bros. Website.

BAFTA loves Wii Sports. A lot.

bafta.jpg

Last night was a pretty glamourous night for video games, as London once again hosted the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards. This year Nintendo saw six awards handed to them, and none of them were for Metroid.

Nope, Wii Sports got the biggest haul of the night winning all six of those awards, beating out the competition in the following categories:

Best Casual Game

Best Gameplay

Best Innovation

Best Multiplayer (beating out WOW, Crackdown, and Battlefield 2142)

Best Sports Game

Best Strategy and Simulation Game (? … OK, sure…)

Other winners include Okami for Artistic Achievement and Best Score, Crackdown for Action/Adventure and Use of Audio, God of War 2 won awards for Technical Achievement and Story/Character, and crowd favourite Bioshock carried home the big one for Best Game.

Writer’s Note: No PS3 games won. Make of that what you will.

Animal Crossing Wii to be an MMO!…?

chris.gif

animal_crossing.jpgOh, how Nintendo likes to toy with our little hearts by “not commenting on rumours or speculation”. Though when they tell us that, we usually know that something’s up. In this case it’s the new Animal Crossing game for the Wii. EDGE magazine seems to know something we don’t (and we know nothing about Animal Crossing Wii, other that it is to be made at some point, so that’s a big step). They’re reporting that a source from Japan claims that the upcoming Animal Crossing Wii game will be a Massively Multiplayer Online Game.

A Japanese source has confirmed to Edge that the upcoming Wii iteration of Animal Crossing is set to be a social networking MMO.

Yeah, they’re really not giving us much there, but if this turns out to be true it could bring realisation of the dream that anybody who has played Animal Crossing has had. If Nintendo doesn’t screw it up it could be huge… and by “huge” I mean MASSIVE! … and MULTPLAYER!… and ONLINE! … and GAME!
