A Closer Look - Boom Blox

Tada! A Closer Look is back! So maybe it isn’t every week, but hey, I’m a busy guy. You’d better be glad I’m here to inform you about the games you haven’t heard about at all. Today I take a look at the first game from Steve Spielberg: EA’s Boom Blox.
Admittedly, Boom Blox isn’t exactly what we expected when we head Steven Spielberg was making a game. I think most of us had Saving Private Ryan in our heads. Despite that initial “Huh, it’s a puzzle g
ame?” Boom Blox actually looks like a pretty kick ass game. Basically, the game has a ton of different puzzles set up that are made with blocks. Your job is to solve these puzzles through various means of destruction. You use gestures to throw, grab, and blast away the blocks in over three hundred different stages. I know, reading that it sounds pretty lame but it’s just tough to explain. The game gets an injection of personality by having a bunch of funny animals. Come on, every game with a monkey has been awesome. A monkey AND a sheep on the cover is almost a guarantee of a quality title. If my explanation of the gameplay didn’t make any sense (which it probably didn’t), here’s a trailer to help you see what I’m talking about.
See, it actually looks cool! You can even make your own levels, or do remixes of any of the existing levels, and send them to your buddies over WiiConnect24. The physics look killer and could lead to some awesome user created levels. We gamers love our physics. There’s also co-op and up to four player split screen multiplayer as well. No online multi-player, but it might not be very much fun online anyways.

So while it maybe wasn’t exactly what we were expecting, Steven Spielberg’s first game looks like a blast (haha. pun.). A puzzle game with great physics and tons of personality? Sign me up! Boom Blox ships to stores on May 6th.
