A Japanese newspaper out yesterday claims that Nintendo is all set to launch a redesigned/updated version of the DS, one that features a built-in camera, MP3 playback, and better networking features. Another version of the story on a seperate news website claims that it will have larger screens, and the ability to transfer data on an SD card from the Wii.
It’s all rumour at this point, though it’s odd that a newspaper would claim it as fact. Mind you, the translation is a little iffy. I don’t really see the need for a new DS right now anyway, seeing as the current Lite model continues to sell just fine. The article claims that Nintendo is making it to compete with other all-in-one devices, like camera phones. I know I’ve got one myself, and an iPod, so this new DS idea doesn’t really interest me.
This comes at an interesting time, seeing as Nintendo is all set to host a major press event on Thursday in California, and an event in Japan at the same time. Now, usually these things are days apart, but having them at the same time indicates that they’ll be giving us something big (no more Wii Music, please?) so even though rumours of a DS-II have been flying for a while, perhaps this story has some possibility.
